Closing the gender human rights gap, sexual health, and sexuality in asylum

The gender human rights gap in the asylum procedural is huge, with rampant sexual exploitation of women. Often, nationals in the rich asylum hosting countries’ go-shopping for asylum seeker young women in camps, temporarily providing necessities and promises of residence authorisation and later dump the victims which is impacting asylum seeker young women’s sexual and reproductive health and rights with severe implications, e.g. the young women often contract HIV and STIs and in many cases unwanted pregnancies resulting into the carrying out of life-threatening unsafe abortion whilst in asylum camps. Other young women have been tricked and recruited into sexual slavery.

There is widespread sexual minority bullying and lack of sexuality centred health services, and worldwide, critical HIV monitored therapy is lacking in the asylum procedure, which is a severe abuse of the human rights of people living with HIV.

What We Do

GASHDC monitors and promotes women’s access to sexual and reproductive health services in asylum, efficacy of legal aid to use legal justice to secure sexuality health services for sexual minorities and sexual and reproductive health services inclusion for young women in asylum and provides for emergency access to HIV therapy treatment in asylum seekers communities. The organisation documents sexual health rights abuses of sexually marginalised persons in asylum and initiates dialogue on sexuality equality and justice with immigration and foreigners’ government departments in asylum host countries.

GASHDC is influencing international law for the first time to critically apprehend such sexual exploitation of women in asylum, lobbying for a comprehensive global law that would make exploitation of women in asylum a capital offence.

Desperate to leave the prison similar conditions in asylum due to the long case-processing duration, women are lured by pimps into false promises of residence authorisation only to fall into the hands of traffickers and ending up into destitution after being trafficked.
